Differences from Canon: You don't have to explain all of it, you can give us a bullet point list, but the more different they are, the more it helps to know.

For Original Universe characters, it's very important to remember that the personality should remain as close to the original as possible, but the AU nature of the game makes it that specifics of backgrounds can be a lot looser.  So a lumberjack from the 1700s can be 100% the same if you choose -- except that they aren't going to freak out over the shock of "SPACE TRAVEL IS IMPOSSIBLE! HOW DO OTHER ALIENS WORK!? THIS TECH IS UNHEARD OF" - unless otherwise specified as unusual (ie: Timelord tech from Doctor Who, Vegapunk inventions etc.)  This is not a jamjar, your characters are not kidnapped, and it is your responsibility as a player to decide the reason they want to be on the ship.

For CRAU: Just explain the games they're coming from, did their personality change, and what experiences shaped that.
Desired position on ship: You can just remain a passenger, Smoker doesn't give a fuck unless you fuck shit up for him. They're pretty post-scarcity, so resources aren't limited, but don't expect to be slaved over. When you're not actually a paying customer, there's no reason for anyone for to kiss your ass. What are you gonna do? Complain? ALTERNATELY: being a passenger on a cruise ship that is also exploring the stars and probably sent on a special suicide death mission to lure political opponents into fights, and literally spend money for REASONS, can get kind of boring. Why don't you take up a hobby? Or a "job?" Triple alternately: maybe your character IS desperate for money, and all but enslaved to their debts, even worse, ANY pay you get, doesn't go directly to you, it goes back home to your debtors/bankers/family etc. Smoker sympathizes, but there's only so much he can do, because his money doesn't come to him either \:|/ Sux, fam.
You can create your own position (within reason, you can't be Captain, just ask Loretta) or if you're stuck here's some examples:

World Info: This can be as SHORT as you like. It can literally be "Earth 2019" and that is fine. Please do not give us 50 pages trying to explain your world, we will cry. Do your best!
How does character fit into their world: Again, as short as you like, "They're normal," is cool. 
How will your character fit into the Relation Ship: From the top: How did they encounter the Relation Ship? And get to a different world? Your character doesn't have to be scifi era themselves, but they should be compatible with the ideas presented, and not treat them as impossible or as if they've been kidnapped. Does your character have a mission? What is it? Remember to AU it to fit into the game, or make it compatible.

One or two "I was working on a transport beam and now I'm here!!!" is fine, but try to be as creative and FUN and interactive as you can with this! 
Desired Position on Ship: IF APPLICABLE!!! Because OCs can't be NPC'd simply at ports, you may say "To be determined!" via threading and CR. Long term passenger is fine, please explain your character's motivations and/or whether they are simply oblivious to any "darker natures" of the ship and they just want to get away, or if they have debts back home (the money will not be sent directly to them), or they're a writer and interested in seeing the world, and totally think everything is sparkly and great.

You do NOT need to re-app if you wish to update an OC to crew/long-term passenger.  Simply add a comment labeled "Update" and explain the desired position etc.
